[NEWS] G-Dragon Interview on ELT Photobook

How old were you when you first got to listen to music?
I was an elementary school student then. One of my friend’s father was working as a producer for a television music program and when I got to visit his place, there were so many music albums of international artists. I heard hip-hop for the first time there and I was kind of shocked.

Like, “there’s this kind of music in the world!”?
I’d only listen to k-pop until I heard of this genre, hip-hop, so I was just like “why is hip hop called to be a good type of music? I don’t even know what this foreign language means.” I just didn’t understand why it was called to be so good, so I wasn’t that much interested in it. But when I heard the song called “C.R.E.A.M” by Wu Tang Clan. They were the most popular U.S. hip hop group back then and my vision of music was just so widened at once.

So the barriers of the language didn’t matter?
Of course i didn’t know the meaning of the lyrics or the right pronunciations of the English language at all, but I didn’t care those kind of things because that music sound was just so cool. I had both the CD and the tape, and I listened to them until the CD and tape were worn out, and I sang along to them as much as I could understand from what they were saying. Also, I wanted to show my friends that I memorized the whole lyrics, so I sang the song on stages, like at the school’s singing festivals. I thought everyone would be just like, “Wow!” and praise me, but they actually didn’t accept it that much. On the contrary, they were just staring at me making faces as like, “What’s he singing? I don’t get it at all.” *laughs*

Ah, that’s sad, but I think you were different from your school friends considering that you must be the only one who was listening to the western music in your elementary school.
Yes, but the friends who were not accepting that music, are calling me now saying, “I should have listened to it with you.” *laughs*

And starting from then, your dorkiness (in a good way) has been defined. *laughs*
Back from when I was younger, I loved to try new things that the others don’t know about, which I thought was great. In fact the very first thing that I started was dancing. I loved to dance along with some music or some television show. We loved to run and jump around meaninglessly when we were young right? Just the same as that, I thought it was fun when I was dancing. My mother saw that and got me to apply to a lot of auditions, which I was accepted to all of them.

[News] Big Bang wants to create music of the new century! :D

Every time the powerful music group Big Bang releases a new album, it will become a topic. After their Japanese promotions end, Big Bang will have their comeback to the Korean music scene in November, to continue creating new music to bring glory to the Korean music industry.

Big Bang “With criticisms then only one will grow up!”

As the leader of Big Bang, besides writing songs for his own group, G-Dragon also often write songs for his juniors under the same company. As for the difference between writing songs for others and for himself, G-Dragon openly shared, saying, “I feel that it is more interesting to write songs for myself!” It’s because G-Dragon feels that only he himself will understand what the album needs. At the same time, only in his own album can he truly express his ideas! Just like his debut album [HEARTBREAKER], although it is well received but there are also a lot of negative comments. For those who criticized, G-Dragon is only holding on to an attitude that is to readily accept it. He said, “I think that if there is criticism, then only I will grow up.” In addition, G-Dragon also revealed that Big Bang will have their comeback in November. He spoke frankly that this time he will break free from the tradition, “Korea’s electronic music is very popular…”, however G-Dragon decided to challenge against the difficulty to cross over the popularity of electronic music and creates new music, hoping that everyone will look forward to it!

[News] G-Dragon reveals the real reason behind Big Bang’s album delay

Since November of 2008, Big Bang has taken an extremely long hiatus from the Korean music market. Although the boys have created digital releases for CFs and contributed in drama OSTs, fans have been patiently waiting for a solid official release. Yet the longer the hiatus stretches, the more anxious fans have become. The situation has degenerated to the point where there are whispers of deteriorating relationships amongst the members, or that the members enjoy acting more than music.

Big Bang appeared at Taeyang’s ‘Solar’ concert on September 26th to show their support for their fellow member. As the concert came to a close, leader G-Dragon met with reporters and revealed the current progress of their next album.

G-Dragon stated, “We’ve completed the song productions but we’ve yet to decide what kind of concept to go with. There were a lot of songs we made over the past two years, but that also means there are a lot to choose from. It wasn’t easy choosing songs that fit Big Bang and would also satisfy our fans.

One of the main concerns for the group was the changed music tastes of the mass public and the fast cycling of the music market. G-Dragon solemnly continued, “I have no confidence in the market anymore. These days, singers finish their promotion cycles in three weeks, and everything changes again. The thought of preparing for two years and only receiving three weeks of love is upsetting.

G-Dragon brings up an interesting phenomenon that has been occurring lately. Songs are ever-changing and receive the “old” treatment once three weeks go by. New songs are always pouring into the market and singers are constantly releasing new songs in order to keep up.

G-Dragon concluded, “I want to sing songs that receive love over longer periods of time. We’ll be working our hardest to make sure that a new Big Bang album is released by the end of this year.”
